With Easter only a few days away I thought it would be lovely to some kids Easter craft to decorate our little Easter tree.
The decorations are super easy to make and would be a lovely fun project for Easter day or the days leading up.
The dough is very easy to make and all the ingredients are pretty much guaranteed to already be in your cupboard – always an added bonus. I already had some Easter cookie cutters so we used those to make our shapes.
You will need…
Salt dough ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup salt
- 1 cup of water
Other items
- Parchment paper
- Baking tray
- Rolling pin
- Easter egg shape cookie cutter
- Bunny cutter or any other shape
- Acrylic paint
- Paint brushes
- Gold paint pen
- String or ribbon for hanging
- Straw for making holes
To make the dough
- Mix together the flour and salt and slowly add the water until it forms a dough
- Knead into a ball
- Flour a surface and roll out the dough until around 5mm thick
- Cut out your desired shapes and then place on a baking tray
- Now is a good time to make the holes in the top of the egg/rabbit
- Space them out nicely and place in the oven on a very low heat 125C/250F for 2 hours
- Once the two hours is up take out of the oven and leave to cool
When they have cooled thoroughly they are ready to paint…
Evie loved painting the eggs and designing sweet patterns, in fact we made another batch as we loved painting them so much.
Tips on painting
We found that we needed several layers of paint for the base colour. Leave the base colour to dry thoroughly before you add your design on top. We used a gold paint pen and other paint colours to apply dots and other designs.
When all the paint is dry cut some ribbon or twine around 10 cm long, loop through and hang on your tree.
We hope you enjoy this little project and wish you all a very happy Easter x
